Tips to Remember as Summer Comes Up

May 17, 2017

Summer in Houston is no joke. In fact, summer in Texas is really intense. The recorded average for a Houston summer day is over 90 degrees, so it’s an absolute must that people know how to take care of themselves and prioritize safety when temperatures do get to an outrageous level. At Houston Gym, we are firm believers in maintaining an active lifestyle, and we know that most of the individuals that visit our gym are also going to be spending time outside with friends and family this summer. We want to make sure that you’re fully aware of what you need to do to stay safe from heat strokes, dehydration, and sunburns.

Drink Lots of Water

One of the most common reasons that people wind up in dangerous situations in the summer is because they aren’t prioritizing their water intake. It isn’t something crazy to have to manage, but it is something that can be easy to lose track of. Every day a person should consume their weight in ounces of water. That means that if you weigh 150 pounds, you should be drinking 150 ounces of water a day. That’s much different than the 8 cups of water a day that we are told, right?

On days that you’re doing something outside or are doing something active, drinking, even more, water can help you keep hydrated. You can get an idea of how hydrated you are by checking your urine. The lighter it is, the more hydrated you are, while darker urine is a good sign that you need to start drinking more water as soon as possible.

Dress Thoughtfully

We aren’t talking about wearing something that looks good, we’re talking more along the lines of something that makes sense and breathes easy. When temperatures get too high, your body has a difficult time cooling down, and while your sweat is a tool that your body uses to maintain a certain temperature, but sometimes it isn’t enough. Wearing light clothes that keep your body cool and give it the opportunity to cool down when it needs it is something that you’ll be glad you did.

Know When to Stop

Pushing yourself is something any trainer at Houston Gym will be happy to see, but something that we love seeing, even more, are individuals that know their bodies and know when to stop. If you are on a hike, out running or playing a game of football, and the temperatures are through the roof, know when to stop. If your body is giving you signs of exhaustion, dehydration or it’s having a tough time cooling down, know that it’s okay to give a break, take a time out, or even just spend some time in the shade hydrating and cooling down. You will be glad that you took the time to slow down and give your body what it needs.

Houston Gym is excited to provide you with everything that you need to challenge your body this summer, but we want to make sure that you stay safe. Stop by today for more health tips from our personal trainers, or to take one of the many fitness classes that we offer. We can’t wait to see you!
